Latin is an ancient language, which today only a few scholars can speak fluently. However, once it was the main language in Europe and was spoken all over the Roman Empire. For more than one thousands year, Latin was the spoken language when discussing political affairs or science.
In fact, even today six out of every ten English words is descended from Latin. Latin is still the main scientific language and all new species that are found are given a Latin scientific name. In the 18th century, Latin was replaced by French, which in turn has more or less been replaced with English.
